The Iron Gate Inn, a bed and breakfast inn, was built in 1885 for John Peter Baden a wealthy indrustialist of the day and founder of St. John's College in Winfield, Kansas. His wife, Mrs. Baden founded the Lutheran orphanage. With five elegant Guest Suites each with its own private in-room bath and fine Victorian details, the Iron Gate Inn is Winfield's most gracious B&B . . .

The Iron Gate Inn, less than one mile from downtown Winfield, is full of interesting and original details from the days of Mr. & Mrs. Baden. The Inn which sits on
two city lots is surrounded by antique iron fencing and gates - which are so low to the ground that a 6-foot person might have to stoop a bit to open the gates, but back in the day, it was the height of fashion! The incredible parquet floors (on the 1st floor 2nd floors) were imported from Europe. The sweeping main staircase (17 feet long) is of hand carved walnut. For their children, the Badens built a frame-style child's-sized playhouse on the grounds which still sits on the grounds. There are three ornate Victorian fireplaces. All windows (including Guest Suites) have original vertical sliding interior shutters. The Baden's opulent 1885 home is now a cozy Bed and Breakfast Inn. Tours are certainly welcomed and free of charge to the public.

The Iron Gate Inn is full of authentic Victorian details like this original fireplace - one of three ornate fireplaces. Highly decorative fireplaces with constructed flues (vs. flue pipe) were the height of fashion in 1885. Fireplaces in the Iron Gate Inn were designed to burn coal - wood was burned by more common-folk and although they produced some heat, providing supplemental heat was not their main function moreover, they provided a focal point to gather and socialize. . . an elegant backdrop to polite Victorian social calls . . .
